Hearts stitch journal, 05 February 2018. A lovely peach and lemon dawn this morning, and well below freezing – I had to break thick ice on the birds’ water dishes today. The mud in the lane was frozen hard underfoot and there was a peculiar patchy effect on the grass, with every other tussock covered in frost, as if BBC special effects had been by and run out of fake snow. Today’s threads are a mixture of vintage modern coton à broder, white plus dyed with carrots, beets and mullein by me; pale green crochet cotton; peach vintage Anchor silk six-strand embroidery thread and DMC white lustre thread (the one I couldn’t find when I was doing the snowdrops). The stitches are threaded chain for the outline; whipped running stitch interspersed with couching for the sky; and half-eyelet for the grass.
