A blue dawn and a dull, overcast day. In my neighbour’s field, the goat willow is in bloom. When we drove out into the countryside at the weekend, we could see it everywhere in the hedgerows, such bright yellow that it looks for all the world like an ornamental tree. Today’s threads are green coton à broder no 16, burgundy Indian rayon thread, marbled grey coton à broder no 1 which I dyed with Procion dyes, grey vintage sewing cotton and yellow vintage sewing cotton. Sewing cottons are generally number 40, so considerably finer than embroidery thread. The stitches are knotted chain for the heart, stem stitch for the stems, and eyelet, straight stitch and French knots for the pussy willows. I really enjoyed doing all these tiny knots.
